Grand-parenting

One thing about being the youngest in the family, you’re always learning from your older siblings. Recently I observed my older sister down on the floor, rolling around as if she were a tootsie roll with her 3 year old grandson. He would fall on top of her and push her all over the floor and she moved where ever he pushed her. I had never seen my mother do this with her grandchildren and never seen any of my sisters do this with their own kids. I was rather amazed to see this new trick being done by my older arthritic sister.

“You need to get down on their level. That is what grandparents do. Grandparents are supposed to play with their grandkids and at their level of play. It is the new rule. We should have been doing this when we were parents but we didn't know. We can now do it with our grandkids."

I can see my sister's connection and bond with this little boy is filled with an unbreakable love sealed together with laughter and fun...almost giddiness, in fact.

So now I know….grandparents are supposed to be more than just relatives who help care, feed, and teach them...they also need to have their grandparents play with them at the kids level of play.

Good to know.
