Writing vs Speaking

I am better at writing than I am at speaking.

Even when I have to give a speech, I write it all out and then rewrite it and rewrite. I’m just not that good at speaking on my feet without a lot of preparation.

I know that some people have the gift to spout eloquently without any preparation at all. They are the ones that are good at Improv, for example. The actor Robin Williams is like that. He can clearly think on his feet in lightening speed.

There are others who have skills to think quickly and chatter away endlessly, capturing and taking us along with their stories and speeches. There are even others who can chatter away and somehow magically know how to take any problem presented to them (even if it is theirs) and some how turn it into a problem that you have either created or now own.

The former Vice President Cheney is like that. Do you remember when he accidentally shot a man and by the end of the hunting trip this man was apologizing to Cheney for getting in the way of his bullets? The ability to maneuver any conversation around so it puts you in a positive light and diffuses blame to others is purely a gift of speaking on your feet.

Recently I became aware that I am better at thinking and speaking on my feet if I have written about that topic ahead of time. For example, if I had blogged about a certain topic, I could spout quickly and eloquently as if I knew what I was talking about. But for topics and discussion I had not spent any time on nor had prepared, I was a bumbling idiot.

Having this realization I decided I could become better prepared if I took the time to write about the topics ahead of time. I could then somehow trick my brain into remembering things it usually forgets and I could come across as someone who could speak on their feet.

So this morning I set on a new quest. I was going to start a new blog dedicated to acupuncture. I need to get prepared on many different alternative medicine topics and thought the best way to do this was to write about them. I even dreamed about what to name this new blog; A-Q-Puncture.

During the blog set up process, something unexpected happened. I recalled a dream I had over 20 years ago that has stayed with me all these years. In this dream I owned several different houses, all in the same area and all owned at the same time. In this dream I would run around from house to house, naked, and exposed. At first it was difficult being naked and exposed but I kept this up and continued to run from house to house.

As I was placing the final touches on my new A-Q-Puncture blog, I had one of those “ah hah” moments and realized this significant dream of 20 years ago was coming to fruition. The dream had been a metaphor about having and using different avenues of writing and sharing (and exposing) my thoughts, ideas, and personal feelings (hence the visual in the dream of me being naked).

You can metaphorically check out my nakedness in any of my "Q-houses” by visiting my other blogs:
  • Another Q– my blog about my fam, interests, quirks, and activities
  • B Dobson – my blog dedicated to my mother’s art
  • Quist Quill – my more serious blog, dedicated to ideas and writing
  • A-Q- Puncture – my new blog focused on learning acupuncture
