Something Old

My former mother-in-law was someone I admired, respected, and loved. She passed away several years ago but recently I had a dream about her in which she was directing me to give the necklace she had given me to my son’s new bride.

The necklace is made up of pastel colors of pinks, yellows, and greens, a treasure purchased many, many years ago in Australia as a memento. She bought three necklaces; one for each of her girls (at that time); her daughter and two daughter-in-laws.

I had the necklace cleaned and recently gave the necklace to my son’s bride-to-be; a symbol not only of something old, but a connection to this lovely woman who is now gone from our lives.

I sometimes feel my former mother-in-law around me but now it seems as if that feeling comes with a huge smile bursting with pride because she has shared a part of herself with her grandson's chosen partner.
